Unfortunately, yes. The more I learn about these remarkable corals, the more I realize just how fragile they can be.

Gorgonians are among the most spectacular organisms found on the Mediterranean seabed. Their large, branching colonies can look like underwater trees, sometimes reaching impressive sizes. But there is something easy to forget: they grow very slowly. A large colony may have taken many years, or even decades, to develop.

What threatens Mediterranean gorgonians?

Several environmental and human pressures can affect these corals. Rising sea temperatures, climate change, pollution, storms, fishing activity and boat anchors can all damage gorgonian colonies.

Their slow growth makes the situation particularly concerning. When part of a colony is broken or damaged, recovery can take a very long time.

Another important point is that gorgonians are not simply beautiful features of the underwater landscape. Their complex branches create shelter and living space for many small marine organisms, making them an important part of Mediterranean biodiversity.

Why should we protect them?

This is what I find particularly fascinating about gorgonians: a large colony represents much more than what we see at first glance.

What looks like a simple underwater fan is actually a living coral colony that may have been developing for decades. Protecting these organisms therefore means protecting a small but important part of the Mediterranean marine ecosystem.

There are simple ways to help. Avoiding physical damage, respecting marine protected areas and being careful around sensitive underwater habitats can all contribute to their protection.

So, are Mediterranean gorgonians in danger? Yes, they face real threats, but their future is not necessarily hopeless. The more we understand these extraordinary corals, the better we can protect them and the underwater ecosystems they help create.

How Is a Gorgonian Coral Made?

The answer is more surprising than it might seem. When I first became interested in gorgonians, what struck me was their unusual appearance: they look like delicate underwater trees or fans, yet they
